CPE dictionary management has transitioned from MITRE to NIST

Brant Cheikes

Effective immediately, management and maintenance of the CPE dictionary, including the submission acceptance and review processes, have transitioned from MITRE to NIST.  The corresponding page on the cpe.mitre.org website has been modified to reflect the change, cf:

http://cpe.mitre.org/dictionary/index.html

Future submissions to the CPE dictionary should be sent directly to NIST, using the published email address [hidden email].  MITRE will serve in an advisory capacity to NIST as needed.  We believe this will promote more efficient and timely updates to the dictionary.

Smith, Robert J Mr NII/DoD-CIO
Brant,

Who at NIST should I talk to about making the CPE dictionary the standard
for all DoD IT Acquisitions and how it will be maintained and funded in the
out years?  The DoD IT Asset Management Integrated Product Team is currently
in discussions to try to add the CPE dictionary as an authoritative source
(for software titles) for all future acquisitions.  The overarching plan is
to have vendors submit their invoices using the CPE dictionary software
vendor, title name, and major version.  This will enable DoD to use a
current contract reporting system via the wide area work flow (WAWF) to
aggregate software purchases and have some means of asset visibility across
DoD and a means for Components to see what they have purchased against what
they have installed and in inventory.
