Updates to OVAL Repository Static Downloads

Jon Baker
Administrator
This morning we launched a new capability that will offer OVAL Repository static downloads in groups based upon the lowest version of the OVAL Language required to validate the content. This means that moving forward we will be able to provide the community with content on an ongoing basis that will work in tools that use earlier versions of the OVAL Language. As part of our infrastructure we will have tools in place that will manage this least required version for OVAL Repository content on an ongoing basis.

Content authors will not need to be concerned with determining the least required version for a set of content that is  submitted to the OVAL Repository. We do not want to put further burden on content authors.

Tool vendors and end users will be able to select static downloads, that are built each night, that will work with the version of OVAL that their tools support.

These static downloads by least required version are cumulative meaning that the content that is in the download for version 5.9 will also appear in the download or version 5.10.

*** It is important to note that the only way to ensure that you have all of the latest content in the OVAL Repository will be to download the content for the official version of OVAL. So today you would have to download the version 5.10 content to ensure that you have all the OVAL Repository content. This is due to the fact that there is content in the OVAL Repository that uses feature of the OVAL Language that were not available before version 5.10. ***

We have started a transition to these new downloads by least version as the primary set of static download. On November 7, 2011 these new downloads will become the official downloads, but we will continue providing the old format of downloads. On January 3, 2012 the old style downloads will no longer be supported.

Over the next couple of weeks you will start to see downloads created for versions earlier than 5.9. For this initial launch we are only producing downloads for version 5.9 and 5.10. We expect static downloads to be available for content going back to version 5.4 or earlier.

As always, these new downloads are available here:
https://oval.mitre.org/rep-data/index.html

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns with this transition.

Thanks,

Jon

As a reminder, the new format for OVAL Repository downloads by least version became the officially support set of downloads on Monday of this week. These downloads are available here:

https://oval.mitre.org/rep-data/index.html

Later this week or early next we will complete the next step in the process which will make available static downloads going back to OVAL Version 5.3. Stay tuned for that announcement.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns with this new set of static downloads.

Thanks,

Jon

We migrated the next set of functionality out to our production environment this afternoon. You will now see static downloads going back to version 5.3.

Please let us know if you have any questions about the new downloads.

Re: Updates to OVAL Repository Static Downloads

Hansbury, Matt
In reply to this post by Jon Baker
All,

Just over one year ago, the MITRE team made a change to the way that we created the static OVAL Repository downloads page.  The below email detailed this change, and stated that we would provide both the old and new style downloads for some time to allow for moving to the new style page and URLs.  We have yet to turn off the code that creates the old style content, but plan on doing so very soon.

If for some reason this would adversely affect any of you, please let us know ASAP.  Assuming no issues exist, we will plan on turning off this content creation sometime next week.

Thanks
Matt
